The rock ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) is from the family of pheasants and capercaillies. It is found in Island living alone or in small groups. In summer, it lives in the tundra above treeline, but in winter, it tries to find a shelter a little bit lower in the shrubs (often in birches and willows). There are a lot of feathers on its paws allowing it to walk in the snow without sinking. Moreover, its winter feathers are white so that it is well hidden from predators in the snow. On the contrary, the summer feathers are brown reddish with black drawings. Like capercaillie chicks, rock ptarmigan chicks eat a lot of insects whereas the adults are vegetarian.
It seems that we found a male territory considering the piles of droppings that we saw everywhere on the ground. Looking at them closer, we can note that there are rests of fir needles. Indeed in winter, the bird diet consists in the only pieces of vegetation which come out of the snow: twigs, conifer needles... It seems that fir needles are prefered to spruce needles.
