Nous avons entamer notre voyage par la route de Kjölur, qui traverse l´interieur de l´Islande en passant entre deux glaciers.
These two last weeks, we have been traveling a lot in the north and north-east of Iceland in the frame of a forest inventory whose aim was to calculate the carbon stocked in the trees. We worked at finding some pre-positioned plots (thanks to the holy GPS) and making an inventory on the plots which were situated in a forested area. Notice than the definition of a forested area is not always the same in France and in Iceland (it is obvious on some of the coming pictures). For example, 2 meters height is enough for a shrubby area to be classified as a forest.
We start our trip on the Kjölur road, which crosses Interior Iceland driving between two glaciers.
We have been traveling in a very well-equiped 4*4: with a laptop with ArcView connected to the GPS to know where we are all the time (same system as in Alaska), electricity generator, fridge to keep cool all our reserves of Skyr (kind of yogurt, speciality of Iceland), other food and beer.
On field, we used advanced staff: a field computer (resistant to all weather conditions) connected to a powerful GPS, to a laser and to an electronic compass. All the trees of the plots were located to the center of the plot and measured. Other parametres were taken such as trees´growth and health.
Notre groupe de travail: nous travaillions avec Björn, un specialiste en SIG. Our working group: we were working with Björn, a GIS specialist.La perche rouge et blanche permet au laser de prendre la position des arbres. Elle est placee juste devant l´arbre a localiser et a mesurer. The red and white pole is set in front of the tree that we want to locate and measure and allows the laser to calculate the distances.
Notre travail nous a ammene a visiter des endroits parfois perdus, notament de belles forets naturelles de bouleau.
Our work sometimes brought us in lost places and especially in some beautiful natural birch forests.
